Main Characters
  • Meg Fellowes- She was an orphan child and she made her living of off stealing from other people. She steals from the wrong noblema and instead of going to prison, she goes to the court of Queen Elizabeth and becomes apart of the royal service.
  • Beatrice Knowles- Came from one of the most noble families and became one of the maids of honor to keep a good relationship with the Queen. One of her skills is manipulation and she tries to get everyone to do what she wants.
  • Anna Burgher- She came from a small town in England and she became one of the maids of honor because of her extreme intelligence
  • Sophia Dee- She became a maid of honor because she wanted to utilize her future psychic skills
  • Jane Morgan- She came from Northern Wales and her major skill was assassination and stealth
Main Conflict
  • Meg gets put into the honors maids and there, she falls in love with a spanish courtier who may pose a threat to the society and the queen.
Quotes
  • “Because I was female, I was forbidden to play a true role as a Golden Rose actor before the crowd” (McGowan 5) I feel like this shows how women did not have a lot of say and were not as important as men in the middle ages.
  • “”Even Worse, the Queen had demanded that all of her ladies put forth their best efforts to entertain her.” (McGowan 165) I feel that this is a good showcase of what people in the King and Queens ‘staff’ was used for. They always had people to entertain her.
  • “Even if I hadn’t already memorized this area of the castle, I knew i’d reached the Queens rooms when I heard the lively sounds of her ladies preparing her evening respite…”  ( McGowan 311) This shows that the Queen and the Kings always have large and very pretty castles.

Overall success of the book
  • Overall I think that the book is very well written and that the book was very successful because there was three more books in the series.

Authors facts and statistics

  • Jennifer McGowan won the RWA Golden Heart Award and was a multiple finalist. She wrote multiple books in the maid of honors series and they were very successful. This book was also her debut novel.

    Both of our books are similar because it is around the same time period. It occurs in the same time while there was a monarchy.
